E-MOBILITY AT EXTREME TEMPERATURES

Up to 40 degrees Celsius are normal for drivers in Badajoz, Spain, during the summer months – but what do these extreme temperatures mean for an electric scheduled-service bus?

Close to the Portuguese border and just under 400 kilometres from the capital Madrid lies the university city of Badajoz. Around 160,000 inhabitants live here and want to be transported from A to B – no problem for the MAN Lion’s City E under normal circumstances. But how does our electric bus perform in extreme temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius?

“At the end of the day, the bus even had enough charge left.”

Manuel Fraile, Head of Sales Bus at MAN Truck & Bus Iberia

TEST AT THE OPERATOR OF THE LARGEST SPANISH ELECTRIC BUS FLEET

When it comes to e-buses, the test drivers in Badajoz are already pros: In this Spanish university city, route operator Tubasa maintains the largest electric bus fleet in the country.

For the test drivers, e-mobility is not new territory – in Badajoz, the transport company Tubasa operates the largest electric bus fleet in Spain. Nevertheless, a MAN Lion’s City E does not shy away from comparison – our electric flagship is well prepared for the challenges even under extreme conditions and faced the reality of the Spanish southwest without any problems: A 16-hour shift on a route of 284 kilometres – at up to 40 degrees Celsius. The result also enthuses Manuel Fraile, Head of Sales Bus at MAN Truck & Bus Iberia, once again: “At the end of the day, the bus even had enough charge left. This shows that our electric bus can even be used on routes where the operation of electric vehicles previously was unthinkable.”

Suitable for everyday use in almost any situation: At the National Transport Awards in Madrid, the all-electric MAN Lion’s City E was chosen “City Bus of the Year”.

Six transport companies tested the MAN Lion’s City E in Spain for everyday suitability in their cities. And the electric bus made a lasting impression – it was chosen “City Bus of the Year” at the National Transport Awards in Madrid. This is not the first award for our innovative electric flagship, which has already won the coveted international iF Gold Award, among others. And certainly not the last – after 78 stops in 15 European countries, the Lion’s City E will go on tour again in 2021. Among others, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Lithuania are on the schedule. And therefore further regional challenges of everyday public transport – which MAN gladly accepts.
